From California to Tulsa: Remote Workers Say ‘It’s Like Being An Expat’

In 2020, Cynthia Rollins, working remotely for a software company in San Francisco, felt stifled in her tiny apartment. Discovering Tulsa Remote, she was intrigued by the offer of $10,000 for remote workers to relocate to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Without prior connections in Tulsa, Rollins made the bold move in November 2020.

Tulsa Remote reports that while participants commit to at least one year, a significant 88% choose to stay longer, reflecting the program’s success.

Tawny Ann De La Peña, who transitioned from journalism to personal coaching, moved to Tulsa in 2021 under the Tulsa Remote program. She speaks highly of Tulsa, placing it above vibrant cities like New York City and LA, where she previously lived.

The post-pandemic “California Exodus” saw 700,000 more people leave California than those who moved in from April 2020 to July 2022.

Rollins enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle in Tulsa, appreciating the easy parking and quick travel times across the city. She notes a significant reduction in stress compared to her life in San Francisco.

De La Peña also values Tulsa’s laid-back environment, which allows her the freedom to build her business and take necessary breaks, a stark contrast to her previous fast-paced life.
